LED Light Bulbs
Compact fluorescent lightbulbs that take ages to come on and seem to give out a sepia colour light, have given all of energy saving bulbs a bad name. The new game in town is LED lighting and it is fantastic.
Led light bulbs can either replace your halogen spotlights, or your central room bulbs. They last around 50 times longer than a conventional bulb and can provide the full spectrum of light from bright white to soft yellow.
Five Numbers to Look for:
1. The Lumens
Lumens = the brightness of the light. Forget watts. It is recommended that you have 300 – 400 lumens per metre squared in a kitch
en and 700 – 800 per metre squared in a worktop area.
2. The Colour Temperature
This is measured in Kelvins and the nearer to 2700K your bulb, the warmer and more like an old fashioned incandescent bulb it’s going to feel. At 3500K or more, the light will feel colder.
3. The Lifespan
Halogen lights should last around 2 years. LED light bulbs should last around 25 years.
4. The Running Cost
This is based on the watts of the bulb. 50 watts burning for 5 hours a day, 365 days a year will cost you:
50 x 5 x 365 x £0.00014 (electricity costs roughly 14p per 1000Watts) = £12.77
Compare this with the cost to run 8 Which? Best Buy equivalent 5.3W led light bulbs = £10.83 (find out more at www.which.co.uk).
Their recommendation, the Integral 5 W GU10 LED can be bought here
5. The Saving
In the above example, you will save approx. £90 in running costs against an initial outlay of £32 extra for the new LED light bulbs.
Payback is in 4 months and you have saved money even if your LEDs only last as long as the halogen bulbs would have done – which they won’t.
