Ground Source Heat Pumps
Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) take heat from the ground via water from boreholes or pipes in buried in boreholes or trenches around your building. This heat is absorbed by refrigerant liquid in the GSHP. This changes the refrigerant from a liquid to a gas. The compressor in the GSHP compresses the gas and raises its heat. Then this heat is passed to your hot water and central heating circuits.
As experience ground source heat pump installers, we know that homes which benefit the most from installing a GSHP are those which are not on the gas grid. If you are running LPG, oil or standard electric heating, you will save money by installing a GSHP. Ground source heat pumps work most cost effectively if they are supplying heat to underfloor heating or specially designed radiators. GSHP are cheaper to run than Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP), and get a higher level of subsidy. They do have higher installation costs than an ASHP. If you have less space and up front capital available, you might want to consider an ASHP.
If you are on the gas grid, you can reduce your carbon footprint by installing a GSHP. Your bills will not increase and you will still receive the RHI subsidy (see below). Whereas an efficient gas boiler will work at around 90% plus, your GSHP will work at 200 – 500% depending on the weather conditions. This means that much less carbon dioxide making fuel, in this case electricity, is being used to provide you with heat.
Renewable Heat Incentive
The Government started to subsidise renewable heat in April 2014. Under this scheme known as the Renewable Heat Incentive or RHI, customers off the gas grid should find that the subsidy, plus their fuel cost saving will pay for the installation in the 7 years that the scheme runs for. Please note that you must have a Green Deal Assessment and carry out all feasible insulation recommendations before applying for the RHI.
