Here are the answers to a few Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Which angle should my roof be at for solar panels?
The answer to this really depends on the season. In the winter a 14 degree angle would be best and in the summer, 62 degrees. Since it’s not usually possible to re-position your roof, an angle of between 35 – 40 degrees is best.
Panels will perform at any angle and it is possible to mount them on a vertical surface on a flat roof, we recommend an angle of 15 degrees as this allows self cleaning without requiring too much ballast to hold them onto the roof.
2. Roughly how much will it cost?
A large domestic installation will cost from £6,000. We can give you an indicative cost for your roof via email and Google Maps. Just get in touch via phone or our contact form for your tailor made costing. We then carry out a full, free site survey before giving you a fixed price quotation.
3. How much space do I need?
A standard panel is 1.6mx1m and panels on a pitched roof should be around 60cm from the roof edge to avoid wind-lift. On a flat roof, panels will be on angled frames and you should allow 50 – 70cm between panels to avoid them shading each other, plus at least 1 metre between the edge of the array and the edge of the roof.
4. What is the environmental benefit?
The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) generated to produce and install a solar panel gives it a carbon footprint of 72gCO2e/kWh compared with 487 for gas or 870 for coal fired power stations . Carbon dioxide is a major contributor to climate change.
